CINTIMA Stands in Solidarity: Observing the February 28th Economic Blackout

On February 28th, CINTIMA will observe the National Economic Blackout, standing in solidarity with marginalized communities, labor movements, and all those demanding systemic change in the entertainment industry and beyond. As a company dedicated to fostering safety, inclusion, and artistic integrity in intimate storytelling, we recognize that economic power is one of the most effective tools for driving meaningful transformation.

Why We Are Participating

The February 28th Economic Blackout is a call to action—a day when individuals and businesses intentionally halt spending to demonstrate the economic force of marginalized and underrepresented communities. This action is not just about withholding money; it’s about reclaiming power and demanding justice, equity, and visibility.

At CINTIMA, we believe that true intimacy starts with acknowledgment—of histories, of power structures, and of the lived experiences of those who have been systematically excluded from decision-making spaces. The entertainment industry, like many others, continues to profit from marginalized voices while offering minimal support, equitable pay, or structural changes to uplift those same voices.

How We Are Observing the Blackout

  • No Business Transactions: On February 28th, CINTIMA will pause all financial transactions. This means no course purchases, and no financial exchanges of any kind.

  • Encouraging Collective Action: We invite our community—intimacy coordinators, filmmakers, actors, and creatives—to join us in this movement, whether by refraining from spending, engaging in discussions about labor rights in entertainment, or reflecting on how economic strategies can be used to disrupt exploitative systems.

Intimacy, Labor, and Economic Power

Our work at CINTIMA exists at the intersection of art, labor, and justice. As intimacy coordinators, we advocate for safe, ethical, and artistically rich storytelling—but this work is impossible without acknowledging the systemic inequities embedded in the industry.

  • Fair Pay & Labor Rights: Intimacy coordinators, like many below-the-line professionals, often face resistance in securing fair pay and recognition. Economic actions like this blackout remind us that labor power is collective power.

  • Representation & Gatekeeping: Who controls funding? Who gets to tell their stories? Who gets hired, and who gets left out? The answers to these questions often come down to economic leverage. By participating in this blackout, we emphasize the urgent need to redistribute power and resources equitably.

  • The Lie of Scarcity: The entertainment industry often operates on a false narrative of scarcity—implying that opportunities, funding, and creative authority are limited and should be hoarded. We reject this. Cinema box office rose year-on-year in 2023 by 30.4%. The media and entertainment industry is expected to grow to $808 billion by 2028 at an average yearly rate of 4.3% (PwC 2024). There is more than enough to go around. But only if we actively work to shift the system that controls distribution.

What Happens After February 28th?

A single day of economic disruption is a spark, not the entire fire. The real work happens in the days, weeks, and months that follow. At CINTIMA, we commit to:

  • Continuing to fight for equity in our industry by advocating for fair pay structures, safe work environments, and artistic agency for intimacy professionals.

  • Building sustainable pathways for intimacy coordinators of marginalized identities, ensuring they have access to the training, mentorship, and career opportunities they deserve.

  • Encouraging accountability from industry leaders—from production companies to unions—to uphold policies that protect and empower workers.

We invite our community to reflect: What does economic power mean in your creative and professional life? How can we continue using our resources to demand and build a more just industry?

Join Us

On February 28th, let’s stand together. Let’s make it clear that our labor, our stories, and our contributions hold immense value. Let’s remind those in power that without us, there is no industry.

CINTIMA is proud to observe the National Economic Blackout. Because intimacy—real, transformative intimacy—begins with courage, accountability, and action.
