"The idealized and commodified sexuality of women, it's as old an invention as film." -David Simon, Body Parts
An integral part of the job of an intimacy coordinator is advocacy. Body Parts is a documentary (now available on Starz!) that robustly depicts where the need for that advocacy came form. While the objectification, exploitation and misinformation of the female body is centuries older than film, film has long perpetuated the problem. The #MeToo Movement exposed just how horrific the problem had gotten off camera. The patriarchy and hierarchy of the production paradigm scared women into accepting scenes and advances for fear of losing opportunities.
Intimacy Coordinators are here to ensure actors maintain their boundaries, agency and body autonomy in the tense environment of a film set. Cheers to all the IC's involved in this moving film!
